The chill of immigration enforcement is already being felt by some soccer fans in the United States. According to Manny Mizael, who helps run a Massachusetts-based fan club for Flamengo, a popular Brazilian team, fears of immigration raids led to the cancellation of a watch party earlier this year. Many of the club’s members are from outside the United States and lack legal status.

“People are being snatched off the streets and getting arrested,” Mizael said. “We decided not to do the game as we thought it could ruin the lives of many people.”

this cancellation offers a glimpse into how President Donald Trump’s immigration policies could affect the 2026 World Cup, a tournament expected to draw approximately 6.5 million visitors to North America, with the majority of matches held in the United States, which is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico. For many fans, attending the World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, prompting them to spend years saving or postpone important purchases.

Visa Concerns and Travel Bans

“People are being snatched off the streets and getting arrested,”

For some, the dream of attending the tournament may already be out of reach. Visa processing times for certain countries now extend beyond the duration of the summer competition. Iran, the first Asian nation to qualify for the World Cup, is among the 12 countries subject to President Trump’s travel ban. While the ban includes exemptions for athletes and officials participating in the World Cup and other sporting events, it excludes fans.

In contrast, the host countries for the most recent World Cups in Russia and Qatar, along with FIFA, implemented visa waiver programs for the majority of ticket holders. As of now, no similar measures are planned for the upcoming tournament.

Staffing Challenges

The Trump administration’s stringent immigration policies are also impacting the recruitment of personnel for the World Cup, according to sources familiar with the matter. FIFA typically contracts with firms experienced in managing large-scale events like the Olympics to assist with tournament preparations. Though, securing such support for the 2026 World Cup has proven more challenging than in the past.
