Paris Olympics Gold Medalist Imane Khelif Accuses IBA of False Accusations
In a recent development that has split the boxing community, Paris Olympics boxing gold medalist Imane Khelif has accused the International Boxing Association (IBA) of making “false and offensive” accusations. This comes after the IBA launched legal action against the International Olympic Committee (IOC), citing safety concerns over gender eligibility.
IBA Files Legal Complaint Against IOC
On Monday, the IBA announced it was filing a complaint with Swiss attorney-general Stefan Blatter against the IOC. The boxing body stated this action was taken due to safety concerns regarding gender eligibility. Similar complaints are also planned to be filed in France and the United States.
The IBA’s Stance and Cited Authorities
The IBA referenced former U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order banning transgender women from women’s sports as validation for its stance. According to the statement released by the IBA, Trump unintentionally but incorrectly referred to Khelif as “a male boxer” in his speech when he signed the order last week.
Involvement of Specific Athletes
The IBA’s complaint specifically targeted Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, who secured gold medals in the welterweight and featherweight divisions at the Paris Olympics, respectively.
Khelif’s Background and Accusation
Khelif, who has consistently competed as a woman, was initially banned by the IBA from the 2023 World Championships after a sex chromosome test deemed her ineligible. However, following the IBA’s loss of IOC recognition due to governance issues, the IOC assumed control of boxing and cleared Khelif to compete in Paris, highlighting her female birth and established history in women’s competitions.
“The IBA, an organization that I am no longer associated with and which is no longer recognized by the IOC, have again made baseless accusations that are false and offensive, using them to further their agenda,” Khelif stated in a press release.
Khelif’s Stand on Fairness and Due Process
“This is a matter that concerns not just me but the broader principles of fairness and due process in sport,” Khelif emphasized. She and her team plan to review the situation and take legal action to protect her rights.
“For two years, I have taken the high road while my name and image have been used, unauthorized, to further personal and political agendas through the spreading and dissemination of baseless lies and misinformation,” she added. “But silence is no longer an option.”
IBA’s Response and Legal Front
The IBA, in response, argued that the IOC’s decision to allow Khelif and Lin to compete and win gold in Paris had denied opportunities to “deserving female athletes.” Switzerland’s attorney-general’s office confirmed receiving the IBA’s complaint, and the boxing body welcomed Khelif’s intention to file a lawsuit.
“It will give us the opportunity to prove in court that she was not allowed to compete in women’s boxing events,” stated the IBA.
Boxing’s Olympic Future Uncertain
The uncertain future of boxing in the Olympic Games added another layer to the controversy. The IOC excluded boxing from the Los Angeles 2028 program and has urged national federations to establish a new global boxing body or face the possibility of Olympic exclusion.
The IOC’s Position
The IOC has maintained that the IBA’s statement is merely another instance of the IBA’s campaign against the IOC.
“The IOC continues to prioritize inclusion and fairness in sporting competitions,” an IOC spokesperson stated.
