Delve into a World of Non-Existent Wonders: The Imaginary Books Exhibition
Calling all bibliophiles and fantasy lovers! An enchanting exhibition is beckoning you to step into a realm where the impossible becomes reality – the Imaginary Books exhibition at the Grolier Club. This unique showcase features a captivating collection of books that never were, meticulously crafted to tantalize the imagination.
A Celebration of the Lost and Fictional
The collection, conceived by Reid Byers, encompasses a diverse array of "books" – from historical masterpieces thought lost to time like Homer’s missing comic epic and Aristotle’s vanished treatise on comedy, to fictional works that exist only within the pages of other books.
A Curator’s Curated Curiosity
What makes this exhibition truly special is its meticulous attention to detail. Byers, alongside a team of expert craftspeople, has resurrected these absent books through stunning replica designs, complete with faux provenance and classifications, mirroring the look and feel of a genuine rare books display.
Beyond the Boundaries
Don’t expect to find pages swirling with lost words. While some books retain blank interiors, others are filled with intriguing extras, adding to the mysterious allure. "These are magic books,” says Byers. "They are held in existence in the case only by a carefully balanced ontological tension. And for technical, thaumaturgical reasons, they cannot be opened. If you were to open one, it would protect itself by turning into something else.”
Step Into a World of Wonder
The Imaginary Books exhibition invites you to engage with the power of imagination and the allure of the unknown. It’s an immersive experience that challenges traditional notions of what constitutes a book and celebrates the enduring fascination with stories that never were.
