Dakar, Dec 22 (APS) – The National Order of Dental Surgeons of Senegal on Monday called on state, health and judicial authorities to strengthen regulation and control measures and to take sanctions provided for by legislation against illegal practitioners and promoters of false advertising.
“We solemnly call on state, health and judicial authorities to strengthen regulatory and control measures and to take the sanctions provided for by law against illegal practitioners and promoters of false advertising,” declared Myriam Thérèse Arlette Dia Ntap, president of the National Order of Dental Surgeons of Senegal.
She hosted a press briefing at the organization’s headquarters, to denounce misleading advertising on tooth whitening practiced by non-practitioners.
According to Ms. Ntap, tooth whitening in Senegal is a professional act that falls under the responsibility of the dental surgeon.
In this regard, the president of the National Order of Dental Surgeons of Senegal denounces the illegal exercise of the dental profession in our country and the illicit practices which abound through false advertising made by unauthorized and unqualified individuals.
“It is therefore shocking and frustrating for any dental professional to see unqualified people continue to offer oral care and promote their service via campaigns on digital platforms and other media with complete freedom and impunity,” criticized the dental surgeon.
These practices constitute an infringement of the legislation in force and a direct endangerment of the health of others, insisted Doctor Ntap.
“These people whom we describe without exaggeration as charlatans are committing an illegal practice of dentistry, endangering the lives of others, and a serious attack on ethics, public health and the dignity of our profession”, for her part denounced Doctor Anna Samb, general secretary of the union of dental surgeons.
The consequences of these practices “are real and visible”, she pointed out, referring to chemical burns of the gums, dental hypersensitivity, destruction of the enamel, serious dental infections, complications which can go as far as heavy and expensive treatment, or even permanent after-effects.
“It is a fight for public health, for the safety of citizens and for respect for the laws of the Republic,” insisted the doctor. beneath Sam.
The autonomous union of dental surgeons of Senegal, in concert with the Order and other associations, says it remains mobilized, vigilant and determined until these dangerous practices are eradicated.
Article 1 of the law of 05-2023 of June 13, 2023 stipulates that “no one may practice the profession of dental surgeon in Senegal if they do not hold a state diploma of doctor of dental surgery or any other recognized equivalent dental surgeon diploma, in accordance with the regulations in force regarding higher education”.
