IIHF Launches Youth Hockey Director Program in Bangkok: Fostering Ice Hockey Development in Asia
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) recently made a significant move to enhance ice hockey development in Asia through the launch of the Youth Hockey Director Program in Bangkok, Thailand. This innovative initiative brings together 17 IIHF member national associations, comprising over 40 participants, for an intensive two-year learning course.
Aiming for Holistic Hockey Development
The program, spearheaded by the IIHF Development Department in collaboration with the IIHF Asia Office, focuses on equipping participants with essential knowledge and skills needed to improve youth hockey development within their respective national hockey administrations. Key learning outcomes include understanding ice hockey industry standards, best practices, and principles, alongside identifying personal areas of improvement.
Targeting Key Positions in National Associations
“In the IIHF Development Department, our mission is to empower key positions within MNAs, particularly Youth Hockey Directors. It is our responsibility to provide the necessary learning environment and education for these individuals, who are then charged with shaping and implementing youth hockey programs in their home countries,” states IIHF Development Director, Kalle Valiaho.
Engaging Learning Experience
The inaugural week of the program proved to be a transformative experience for all participants. “There was a wide range of learning modules, which made for an engaging conversational and educational atmosphere. We actively participated in sessions, enhancing the overall learning process,” shared Brandon Po-Yun Hsiao, the National Team Coach of Indonesia.
Baseline for Strategic Planning and Development
The curriculum was meticulously crafted after a comprehensive youth hockey survey among Asian member associations and additional individual surveys of participants. It was designed to address the specific needs of Youth Hockey Directors, with an emphasis on administration and sport-specific elements relevant to their roles.
Future-Focused Program Structure
The training program will cover several key areas, including strategic planning and development, leadership and human relationships, and coach development. The training is designed to give each participant a customized set of action cards, to be refined and enhanced during subsequent training sessions.
