Ibiza Students champion Blood Donation drive,Saving Lives Through Community Action

A Day of Solidarity at IES Sa Colomina

the gymnasium at IES Sa Colomina in Ibiza was transformed into a hub of altruism yesterday, hosting the third annual blood donation campaign. Spearheaded by biology and geology teachers as part of the “CooperaciĂ³ I Serveis to the Community” curriculum, the event saw students actively engaging in promoting blood donation by sponsoring adult donors, emphasizing the profound impact of their actions on saving lives.

Empowering Students Through Real-World Impact

Professor Ines Olalla underscored the significance of the initiative, highlighting its educational value in teaching students about the circulatory system and the critical role of first aid.

We want students to understand that donating blood is saving lives. As they still cannot donate, we promote adult sponsoring, allowing them to actively participate in this initiative.
professor Ines Olalla

This hands-on approach allows students to contribute meaningfully to their community while gaining invaluable knowledge about healthcare and civic responsibility.

Ensuring Donor and Recipient Safety: The Donation Process

The blood donation drive adhered to strict medical protocols, ensuring the safety of both donors and recipients.A dedicated space, managed by Sang i Teixits (blood and Tissues bank) of the Balearic Islands, served as an information point, providing promotional materials and brochures to educate attendees about the importance of blood donation.

Dr. MarĂa Camero detailed the meticulous screening process:

Each person first goes through administrative control and then by a medical review to ensure that he can donate. Factors such as recent trips, medicines consumption or surgical interventions are taken into account to guarantee the safety of the donor and the receiver.
Dr. MarĂa Camero

Dr. Camero also emphasized the importance of hydration and having eaten before donating to prevent dizziness during blood extraction.

A Former Student’s Commitment to Saving Lives

Among the donors was MartĂn de la Peña, an alumnus of IES Sa colomina, who was donating blood for the second time. MartĂn’s dedication exemplifies the lasting impact of the school’s initiative.

Last year I participated as a student and this year, which I am already of legal age I have come to donate. It is a solidarity act that can save lives… This is a small gesture with a grate impact.
Martín de la Peña, Alumnus of IES Sa Colomina

Inspired by his desire to help others, MartĂn aspires to become a doctor, further demonstrating the ripple effect of community engagement.

Increasing Participation and Overcoming Challenges

Throughout the day, students actively engaged in informative activities, encouraging their families and teachers to participate in the blood donation drive. The goal was to surpass the previous year’s figures and collect as many donations as possible. Professor Olalla noted that while the previous year saw a positive response, some potential donors were unable to donate due to health concerns. This year, the focus was on overcoming those challenges and maximizing participation.

Eligibility and Guidelines for Blood Donation

To become a blood donor, individuals must be of legal age, weigh over 50 kilograms, and be in good health. It’s important to note that individuals with a cold are not eligible to donate. Women can donate blood up to three times a year, while men can donate up to four times a year, with a minimum interval of two months between donations. Additionally, a six-month waiting period is required after getting a piercing or tattoo [2].

The American Red Cross also emphasizes the importance of donor safety and provides extensive eligibility guidelines [2]. These guidelines are in place to protect both the donor and the recipient.

How to Get Involved

For those interested in becoming blood donors, appointments can be scheduled through the Sang i Teixits bank website of the Balearic Islands (www.donasang.org). Giving blood is a simple yet powerful way to make a difference in someone’s life [1].
