A new subsidy initiative, spearheaded by ZonMw under the KIC program, aims to diminish health inequalities affecting individuals with lower socio-economic standing. This call for proposals encourages the creation and implementation of technological solutions that bolster health and self-sufficiency within their immediate environments. This is notably relevant as studies show that individuals in lower socio-economic groups frequently enough face barriers to accessing quality healthcare, leading to poorer health outcomes.

The initiative seeks to foster collaborative, practise-oriented research among knowledge institutions, social enterprises, and commercial entities. The primary objective is to achieve lasting health improvements for vulnerable populations through the strategic submission of smart technologies and data science. Informational sessions and collaborative workshops are scheduled to facilitate engagement and collaboration among interested parties.

Digital Change: Streamlining Cardiac Care in South Limburg

Zuyderland Medical Center has launched a digital care path for patients managing heart rythm disorders, including atrial fibrillation. This innovative approach leverages digital applications, notably the BeterDichtbij app, to provide remote guidance and monitoring. The benefits include expedited patient care and reduced hospital visits. The digital pathway facilitates secure communication with healthcare providers through image calling and chat functions, ensuring patients receive timely information and support.

This patient-centric model promotes efficiency and actively involves individuals in their healthcare journey. It aligns with Zuyderland’s broader strategy to enhance accessibility and quality through digital healthcare solutions. The adoption of digital care paths reflects a growing trend in healthcare, with many institutions exploring telehealth and remote monitoring to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.

Digital Inclusion: Government Information Point Thrives at St.Antonius Hospital

The Digital Government Information Point (IDO) at St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein, a collaborative effort with Nieuwegein Library, has proven remarkably prosperous. As its inception in December 2023, the IDO has become a regional hub for digital literacy support, particularly for the My Antonius app and DigiD.The majority of inquiries revolve around DigiD application and activation, which are crucial for accessing digital healthcare services. Given the escalating demand and the critical importance of digital inclusion, the partnership has been extended until at least may 2025.

The IDO offers daily assistance with digital queries, encompassing smartphone, tablet, and app usage. This service empowers patients and visitors to manage their healthcare independently, supporting the hospital’s overarching goal of making digital care more accessible to all.

Advanced Treatment: Maastricht UMC+ Pioneers Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation

Maastricht UMC+ has recently achieved a milestone by administering adaptive deep brain stimulation (ADBS) to a Parkinson’s disease patient for the first time. This cutting-edge technique dynamically adjusts electrical stimulation based on real-time brain activity, mirroring the function of a thermostat. Unlike conventional DBS, which delivers constant signals, ADBS offers targeted stimulation, potentially leading to improved symptom management, such as reduced tremors and stiffness, and fewer adverse effects.parkinson’s disease affects millions worldwide, and innovative treatments like ADBS offer hope for improved quality of life.

Maastricht UMC+ is one of only three centers in the Netherlands currently providing this treatment. In collaboration with Haga Hospital/Leiden University Medical Center and Amsterdam UMC, the MUMC+ is conducting research to evaluate the long-term efficacy of this technology.
