Born Robert Alan Shenkman on June 7, 1953, in Philadelphia, Trebor’s journey to becoming a beloved character actor was marked by early passion and dedication. He adopted his stage name—his given name spelled backward—during his college years to distinguish himself from another Robert Shenkman, a playwright. this decision proved pivotal in carving out his unique identity in the entertainment industry.

Before fully committing to acting, Trebor explored his creative talents by writing and directing short films, composing music, and even contributing reviews to Scholastic magazine. After graduating from Northwestern University in 1975, he moved to New York City, where he honed his craft in various stage productions, including works by Shel Silverstein. His film debut came in the 1980s with a role in the movie gorp.

salmoneus: The Role That Defined a Career

While Trebor’s extensive resume boasts numerous credits, he is perhaps best remembered for his recurring role as Salmoneus in 20 episodes of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys (1995-1999) and his four appearances in Xena: Warrior Princess. initially slated for only a couple of episodes, Salmoneus’s popularity with fans led to an expanded storyline, solidifying Trebor’s place in the hearts of viewers.

Trebor himself humorously acknowledged that his character was less muscular than Sorbo, referring to Kevin Sorbo, the lead actor in Hercules. Despite this, Salmoneus’s wit and charm made him a fan favorite.

Salmone’s goal is to try to be a good person, but his essential mercantile instincts were constantly disturbed. I never perceived him like a thief… I, too, never perceived him as a fraudster, even though I realized why other people could.
