IBM and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have announced a partnership aimed at advancing “quantum-centric supercomputing.” The collaboration seeks to integrate quantum computers with customary high-performance computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
According to the companies, a “quantum-centric supercomputing architecture” involves quantum computers working alongside high-performance computing and AI, typically supported by CPUs, GPUs, and other compute engines. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that the collaboration aims to “build a powerful hybrid model that pushes past the limits of traditional computing.”
IBM’s stock saw a slight increase in premarket trading, while AMD shares experienced a more critically important gain. AMD’s shares have risen considerably this year.
In June, IBM unveiled what it described as a “viable path” toward creating the world’s frist large-scale, “fault-tolerant” quantum computer by the end of the decade. This computer, known as IBM Starling, is projected to perform significantly more operations than current quantum computers. This announcement followed alphabet’s (GOOGL) previous unveiling of a quantum computing chip capable of completing complex computations in a fraction of the time it would take traditional supercomputers.

Despite these advancements, widespread adoption of practical quantum computers remains years away.Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang initially suggested that truly “very useful” quantum computers were still more than 15 years in the future, although he later expressed increased optimism about the technology.
