For the second consecutive season,the Carolina Hurricanes‘ playoff journey concluded without reaching the Stanley Cup Final,their campaign ending on the brink of elimination.

Their latest bid was halted in the Eastern Conference final, a recurring stumbling block in their pursuit of hockey’s ultimate prize.

The hurricanes suffered a 5-3 defeat against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night in Game 5. This result propelled the Panthers to the Stanley Cup Final for the third year running, while Carolina’s extended playoff run fell short of its ambition.

Mirroring the previous year, the Hurricanes faced a 0-3 series deficit, battling through multiple games to recover, only to relinquish a two-goal lead at home in the decisive match.

“I think essentially we lost in the first few games,” said Carolina captain Jordan Staal.”You can’t start a series like that adn expect a better outcome.”

Last year, a similar fate befell them against the New York Rangers, who had secured the Presidents’ Trophy. After falling behind 0-3 in the second round, the Hurricanes rallied to win two elimination games. They even held a 3-1 advantage in the third period of Game 6 at home, but the Rangers mounted a comeback fueled by Chris Kreider’s hat trick, resulting in a 5-3 victory.

This time around, they faced a 0-3 series deficit against the reigning Stanley Cup champion, a resilient and experienced team that effectively countered Carolina’s aggressive forechecking strategy. The final score mirrored the previous year’s heartbreak.

“We knew it was going to be a big task to try to beat them,” stated Carolina’s Sebastian Aho, who scored two first-period goals on Wednesday. “We truly believe we have what it takes, but obviously we fell short yet again.”

Reflecting on the series, the Hurricanes lamented their home losses in the first two games, particularly the 5-0 shutout in Game 2, where the Panthers dominated and the home crowd voiced their frustration with chants of “Shoot the puck! Shoot the puck!”

“Those first two games you’d probably want back, but it’s too little, too late,” said Seth Jarvis, who scored a tying goal in the third period before Carter Verhaeghe’s go-ahead goal for Florida. “And that’s kind of the result of it.”

Turning Point in Game 3

In Game 3, what began as a 1-1 tie entering the third period quickly escalated into a 6-2 defeat, marking Carolina’s 15th consecutive loss in a conference final, dating back to sweeps in 2009, 2019, and 2023 against the Panthers.The Hurricanes managed to win Game 4 on the road, averting another sweep, but faced an uphill battle to achieve the improbable comeback.

Carolina initially took a 2-0 lead, with Aho capitalizing on Panthers’ turnovers in the neutral zone to score twice against Sergei Bobrovsky. However, the Panthers responded with a flurry of three consecutive goals in the second period, erasing the deficit and silencing the once-raucous crowd.

Although Seth Jarvis managed to tie the game in the third period,the momentum had shifted dramatically after the Panthers’ scoring burst,which coach Rod Brind’Amour described as “a backbreaker.”

Carolina’s playoff journey included five-game series victories against the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals,the latter being the top seed in the Eastern Conference. However, the Hurricanes’ home dominance in those series (5-0) contrasted sharply with their three home losses against the Panthers.

despite making seven consecutive playoff appearances, Carolina has been unable to advance beyond the Eastern final in three of those years.

“We’ve had slow starts in the series, when it gets to the top four teams, they’re great teams, and having a slow start is never great,” Staal said.

“Obviously we always believe in the group when we get here and coming up short is never easy, and it doesn’t get any easier. We’ll just try to get better and try again.”
