Hurricane Priscilla & New Atlantic Storm: Updates

L’Hurricane Priscilla he came close to it yesterday 3rd category on the Saffir-Simpson scale, approaching the western coasts of Mexico, while a new tropical storm – named Jerry – formed and rapidly intensified in the Atlantic Ocean. This is what the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced. In the Pacific, Priscilla records sustained winds of up to about 170 km/h, moving north/west at a speed of 15 km/h. Yesterday evening, the eye of the storm was located approximately 604 km west of Cabo Corrientes and 305 km south-south/west of the southern tip of Baja California. The hurricane’s outer bands had already reached the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.

Local authorities have issued an alert for tropical storm along the coast from Cabo San Lucas to Cabo San Lázaro and, as a precautionary measure, have suspended classes in all schools in Los Cabos and La Paz starting Tuesday. Twelve temporary shelters have also been set up to accommodate the inhabitants of the most vulnerable areas.

Priscilla-related rainfall is forecast to reach up to 10 cm of accumulation in southwestern regions of Mexico, particularly in the states of Michoacán and Colima, with the risk of flash floods. Waves and rip currents along the coast pose a significant threat. The NHC also estimated that the hurricane will begin to weaken in the next few hours.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the continent, in the Atlantic, the Tropical Storm Jerryapproximately 1,658 km East-South/East of the Northern Windward Islands. Maximum winds have already reached 85 km/h and, according to experts, the storm could develop into hurricane within a day or two. The eye of the storm is expected to pass near or north of the islands of Barbuda, Anguilla, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten between Thursday and Friday, where a tropical storm warning has been issued.

Farther out in the Pacific, the tropical storm Octave instead it is losing strength about 1,207 km South/West of the tip of Baja California, with winds of 75 km/h and a slow movement towards East-South/East.
