many people regularly consume a variety of pills, capsules, and powders, incorporating nutritional supplements into their daily routines. The supplement market is currently experiencing unprecedented growth.
Dr.LISA EMMER, a physician and founder, notes a gap in the healthcare system: “Our system is designed for damage limitation and acute medicine, not on prevention.” She believes this is a critical oversight, stating, “When I work in the clinic, I realized that hormonal issues and the prevention of chronic diseases are neglected.”

EMMER highlights the importance of personalized supplement use, considering factors like individual cycle status and diet. She cautions against excessive iron intake, which can lead to liver damage and impaired organ function.
Potential pitfalls of Supplementation
According to EMMER, caution is advised when supplementing with zinc and iron due to the risk of overdose, which can cause more harm then good.A common result of overdosing is oxidative stress, which can damage cells and tissues, potentially disrupting cell functions and the gut microbiome over time. EMMER also cites studies suggesting that incorrect supplement combinations can increase the risk of cancer due to oxidative stress.
Water-soluble magnesium, when overdosed, is excreted but can cause side effects like diarrhea or kidney overload, potentially displacing calcium. While overdosing on fat-soluble vitamins like E or D is challenging, EMMER explains that long-term accumulation in tissues can disrupt cell division or metabolism.
“I would be careful when supplementing zinc and iron. This can quickly result in an overdose and rather harm than,”
EMMER points out that nutrient combinations can also pose challenges, as some nutrients, like calcium and iron, compete for absorption. Taking these together can reduce the absorption of one or both. Therefore, she advises against taking iron tablets with milk. Though, she notes that vitamin B complexes, vitamin D combinations, and magnesium are generally well-tolerated in appropriate doses. Side effects typically occur only with excessive intake, emphasizing the importance of consulting with medical professionals for proper dosage.
The Importance of Proper Dosage
EMMER stresses the importance of medical guidance for determining the correct dosage. She emphasizes that “more” is not always “better,” cautioning against the misconception that supplements work on a “watering can principle.” Overdosing can harm the body, impair cell functions, and negate the benefits of supplementation.
Synergistic Supplementation
EMMER aims to prevent overdosing and competing effects with her startup, Hormonic. She explains, “We have evaluated several hundred studies and saw the following: Certain active ingredients look much more efficient in combination than if you take them alone in high dose or combined wildly.” EMMER and her co-founder, LEE PAULINA PAPE, developed the concept of “synfillment,” a strategic combination of synergy and supplement.”In our capsules, such as, we rely on lower doses of the individual nutrients, which in combination but achieve a greater effect than alone.”

Promoting Women’s Health Through Targeted Supplementation
EMMER and PAPE launched their mission to provide women with greater clarity in their hormonal health last October. They aim to make targeted supplementation and telemedical advice easily accessible to women.
EMMER advocates for increased equality in science, emphasizing the need for more research on clinical conditions in women and greater investment in the FemTech sector. She encourages individuals to see themselves as conducting a “small self-study.”
While targeted nutritional supplements can help counteract the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, EMMER notes that they are not a singular solution. She points out that modern lifestyles, where women pursue careers and have children later in life, can strain the body and contribute to cellular degeneration and the emergence of new diseases.
However, EMMER remains optimistic, stating, “Precisely because we live in a world full of stimuli, I want to simplify access to supplements – and combine it with medical background knowledge… Equal digital health generation is very possible.”
