How to Text Chat in Fortnite

Fortnite Gets Text Chat: Socialize, Strategize, and Report Toxicity

Fortnite has finally embraced text chat, bringing a whole new level of communication and interaction to the popular battle royale game. Starting December 10th, creators will have the option to enable text chat in their islands, allowing players to connect and strategize like never before.

Three Ways to Chat

Text chat in Fortnite comes in three flavors:

  • Party Channel: Chat with your squad! When you join a party, you’ll automatically be connected to a Party Channel, allowing seamless communication with your teammates across different islands.
  • Game Channel: Public conversation awaits! Islands with enabled Game Channel text chat will connect players on the same instance, fostering teamwork and friendly banter. Creators can choose whether Game Channel includes everyone or just teams.
  • Direct Messages (DMs): Private conversations take center stage. Send private messages to friends on your Fortnite or platform friends list.

Managing Your Chat Experience

Once you’ve opened text chat, easily switch between Party Channel, Game Channel, and DM Channels. Even when focusing on gameplay, you’ll receive previews of incoming messages.

Keeping Things Safe

Epic Games is committed to ensuring a safe and positive environment for all players.

  • Text Chat Filters: A new "Personal Information" filter automatically removes sensitive data like email addresses and credit card numbers from conversations. Mature language filters have also been improved.
  • Expanded Reporting: Text chat now includes reporting options. If you encounter inappropriate messages, you can submit them as evidence to Epic Games, helping them enforce community rules.
