Recent research from Monash University in Australia suggests a fascinating connection between muscle volume and brain structure. Specifically, adults with greater thigh muscle volume in midlife exhibited larger brain volumes. This finding adds weight to the growing understanding that physical health and cognitive health are deeply intertwined.

"Our brains are like any other part of our body," explains David Merrill, an adult and geriatric psychiatrist and director of the Pacific Brain Health Centre. "‘Use it or lose it’ is not just a hypothesis, it’s a basic biological fact that holds as true for our brains as our muscles or our bones."

Strengthening Your Mind Through Movement

This study doesn’t definitively prove that strong muscles directly cause a larger brain, but it does point towards a significant relationship. Just as using your muscles builds strength and mass, engaging in regular physical activity may contribute to maintaining a healthy brain size and function.
