Honda Mobilio Production Ceases in Indonesia Amidst Shifting Market Preferences

The End of an Era for the Low MPV

In a notable move reflecting evolving consumer tastes, PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) has officially halted production of the Honda Mobilio in Indonesia. This decision underscores a notable shift in market demand towards the Low Sport Utility Vehicle (LSUV) segment, which has witnessed a surge in popularity among Indonesian car buyers.

Mobilio’s Journey: From Bestseller to Discontinuation

The Honda Mobilio,a seven-seater mini MPV [[1]], initially made its debut in Indonesia in 2014 and quickly became a prominent player in the Low Multi-Purpose Vehicle (LMPV) category. Tho, in recent years, sales figures have steadily declined. This downturn, coupled with the absence of any recent model refreshes, has paved the way for the rise of low SUVs like the Honda BR-V, Toyota Rush, and Mitsubishi Xpander Cross.

Honda’s Strategic Shift Towards LSUVs

Yusak Billy,Sales & Marketing and After Sales Director of PT HPM,stated that production and delivery adjustments are being made to align with current market demands. He further elaborated that the company has been strategically focusing on the LSUV segment since mid-2024 to cater to the preferences of consumers seeking seven-seater vehicles, acknowledging the prevailing market trends.

We do production and delivery arrangements to adjust to market demand… Since the middle of last year, we have indeed focused on the LSUV segment to meet the 7-seater segment according to the needs of consumers and market trends.

Mobilio’s Disappearance from Sales Data

While the Honda mobilio remains listed on Honda’s official website, its absence from the Gaikindo (association of Indonesian Automotive Industries) 2025 wholesale data is conspicuous. The Mobilio, which typically appeared alongside models like the Brio RS, CR-V, HR-V, City Hatchback, WR-V, and BR-V, has not been listed as the beginning of January. Data indicates that onyl 421 units of the Mobilio were distributed last year, with the last recorded distribution from the factory to dealerships occurring in June 2024 (60 units).Notably, there were no distributions in February and May of that year.

The BR-V Takes the Baton

Honda is now focusing on the BR-V to fulfill the demand for seven-passenger vehicles. The company has also seemingly shifted its promotional efforts, with the Mobilio no longer featured at Indonesian automotive exhibitions. The Honda BR-V offers an option within the seven-seater segment, equipped with features like continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Earth Dreams Technology for smoother gear transitions and optimized fuel consumption [[2]].

Looking Ahead: the Future of Honda in Indonesia

The discontinuation of the Mobilio signals a strategic realignment for Honda in the Indonesian market. By prioritizing the LSUV segment with models like the BR-V, Honda aims to capitalize on the evolving preferences of Indonesian consumers. While the Mobilio’s journey has come to an end,its legacy as a popular Low MPV will be remembered. The shift towards SUVs reflects a broader global trend, with consumers increasingly favoring vehicles that offer a blend of practicality, style, and enhanced road presence.
