The mother cows may have become aggressive because of the dog of the couple on Dachstein. An 85-year-old later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on the way to the emergency surgery.

A couple was attacked by a herd of cows on Sunday evening while hiking in Ramsau am Dachstein. The man later died in the hospital, as the Styrian police announced on Monday.

The 85 and 82-year-old from Vienna went with her dog on a forest path from the Türlwandhütte towards the Austriahütte. Shortly before the hut, they came across a herd of cows around 5:45 p.m. – consisting of three calves and suckler cows. The animals should then be targeting the dog’s dog, and the two Viennese attacked and trampled them down. The dog fled.

Other hikers and the hut operators immediately hurried, provided first aid and alerted the rescue. The 85-year-old was flown to Cardinal Schwarzenberg Clinic in Salzburg by a rescue helicopter. There he has succumbed to his serious injuries on the way to emergency operation. The 82-year-old was flown to the UKH Salzburg. According to the police, it is not in mortal danger. The dog was only slightly injured.

The Leoben public prosecutor ordered an autopsy to clarify whether the injuries suffered during the attack were the cause of the 85-year-old’s death. The police are still investigating the exact circumstances of the incident. (Red.)
