Countless mountain huts grant hikers between Allgäu and Berchtesgaden shelter. We present the highest shelter in Bavaria.
Bayern – If you dream of spending a night high above the clouds, you don’t have to go on an airplane. It is also much cheaper: Between Königssee and Kleinwalsertal, hikers are open in summer the doors of numerous mountain huts. Some are by cable car, others are only accessible on foot. The most beautiful sunrise can of course only be observed by the highest people. We reveal where they stand.
Münchner Haus is Bavaria’s highest mountain hut

The highest house of Bavaria – as it should be – is also not far from the highest point in the Free State. The Munich house on the western summit of the Zugspitze-and this has been enthronated by the Munich House, which is operated by the Munich Section of the German Alpine Club (DAV), thanks to several cable cars for almost everyone since 1897.
The few sleeping places that are available on Germany’s highest mountain serve primarily as accommodation. Because anyone who stays in the Munich house usually has larger alpine activities such as the legendary anniversary ridge in mind. Hikers or tourists who want to visit the hut do it better during the day – before the last cable car hovers towards the valley.

Popular with hikers and climbers
Just a few kilometers away, in the middle of the Wettersteingrat between Bavaria and Tyrol, the Meilerhütte of the DAV section Garmisch-Partenkirchen is scratching the clouds. It is also popular with climbers and climbers. But also safe hikers with a decent condition have a chance and enjoy the comprehensive panoramic view from the terrace of the 2366 meter high -lying shelter. Depending on the starting point and the selection of route, the tour to the Meilerhütte takes between four and five hours. If you start at Elmau Castle in Krün Castle, you can also visit the famous Schachenschloss of the “Märchenkönig” Ludwig II, including the neighboring Alpine garden.

If you like to take picturesque calendar photos, you will be right on the Rappenseehütte of the DAV section Allgäu-Kempten. With 304 sleeping places, the shelter in the Allgäu Alps trumps all DAV huts. A special attraction in its catchment area is the Heilbronn Weg – a partially insured alpine climb, the experienced one leads to the 2615 meter high Steinscharten head.
Bergsee compensates for promotion
As a guest of the most spacious DAV hut, you don’t necessarily have to gymnastics at dizzying heights. If you want to put your legs up after the almost four -hour ascent, you can do this just a few meters from the hut door – at the Fantamy Rappensee.

Refurbishment in 2017
Mountaineers, who have mastered the Heilbronn Weg, often pass the Waltenberger Haus during the descent. The shelter of the Allgäu-Mimmenstadt section will be 150 this year, but is no longer in the original state. Since 2017, the spacious hut has been shining at 2084 meters above sea level in a new wooden shingle look. Around 3.5 hours must be planned for the ascent from the hamlet of Birgsau, a district of the municipality of Oberstdorf. There are no cable cars here – not even for hut supply. As just one of two alpine club huts in the Allgäu, the Waltenberger house can only be supplied by helicopter.

Starting point for famous via ferrata
Number five on the list is also located in the Allgäu Alps. In the middle of green mountain meadows, between the rugged hammer tips on one side and the mighty sheep heads on the other, the Fiderspasshütte of the Oberstdorf DAV section is located. The house is primarily known as the starting point of the famous Mindelheimer via ferrata, which leads over the ridge of the sheep’s pubs via ladders, bridges and numerous exposed passages. If you complete it and then descend to the south, you can get out at the Mindelheimer Hütte – which was just not made it in the list at 2012 meters.
