Lebanon Arms Dispute: Hezbollah and Amal Movement Protest Government Restrictions
Tensions rise as Hezbollah refuses to disarm, threatening potential conflict.
BEIRUT – The Lebanese “Hezbollah” group and the “Amal Movement” have called for a demonstration this Wednesday in Riad El -Solh Square. This protest is against the government’s decisions to restrict arms to the state, following Hezbollah’s mid-August proclamation refusing to surrender its weapons and threatening to “fight a battle” if necessary.
According to the Lebanese National Media Agency, the groups stated that the government decisions made on August 5 and 7 “contradict the supreme national interest, the national reconciliation document, and the formula of coexistence.”
The statement emphasized, “Our patience has long been on the challenges facing our country, and it is indeed time to express our unified national position.”
The groups also declared that “this stand is an affirmation of our right to preserve our weapon, wich has proven its ability to break the thorn of enemies, and our right to resist the Israeli enemy that praises our land, occupies part of it, and restricts our freedom.”
Hezbollah Secretary -General Naim Qasim is scheduled to deliver a speech on Monday afternoon.
Inventory of weapons Plan
On August 7, the Lebanese government endorsed the objectives outlined in the American proposal aimed at stabilizing the ceasefire agreement established last November between Lebanon and Israel. The government has tasked the army with formulating a plan to confine arms to the state, with a deadline for completion by the end of August.
Last Thursday, the initial phases of transferring weapons from Palestinian camps to the Lebanese army commenced, marking the beginning of a process expected to conclude in the coming weeks.
The American envoy Tom Barak presented a paper to the Lebanese government containing 11 goals, including “the gradual ending of armed presence, all non -governmental parties, including Hezbollah, in all Lebanese lands, south and north of Litani, while providing support to the Lebanese army and internal security forces.”
