Health App Provides Heat Wave Guidance for South Korean Seniors

A new initiative leverages mobile technology to deliver customized heatwave advice to elderly citizens in South Korea, addressing a critical health risk during the summer months.

The ‘Health’ app is now offering customized heat wave response guidance for elderly users, according to an declaration made on May 26 by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Promotion and development Institute.

Data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s emergency room surveillance system revealed that over 65s accounted for 30.4% of all thermal disease patients last year. This highlights the increasing importance of safeguarding senior health during severe heat events.

Current heat wave impact forecasts, disseminated by the Ministry of Public Management and Security, the Meteorological Administration, and local governments, are typically delivered as general alerts to all citizens, lacking specific targeting for the elderly population.

The ‘Health’ app addresses this gap by automatically integrating forecast information from the Meteorological Agency. It then provides tailored health and behavioral tips to elderly users, designed for easy understanding and practical application during heat waves.

These personalized alerts are automatically sent at 7:00 am, aligning with the daily routines of many elderly individuals.

The ‘Today Health’ app currently supports 120,000 seniors with healthcare services, focusing on promoting healthy habits and preventing age-related conditions such as frailty and chronic diseases.

Officials Emphasize Collaboration and Proactive Measures

“We have established the automatic provision system of health care information in connection with the data of the Korea Meteorological Agency without the burden of work of the health center this year.”

Kwak Soon -heon, head of the Ministry of Health, and Welfare, emphasized the efficiency gains, stating, “We have established the automatic provision system of health care information in connection with the data of the Korea Meteorological Agency without the burden of work of the health center this year.”

Kim Heon -joo,director of the Korea Health Promotion and Development Institute, added,”This is an appropriate service that is a collaboration of the Ministry of Welfare, the Korea Meteorological Administration, and the Korea health Promotion Development.”
