Health Marathon Lecce: Prevention & Screening Stage 2

LECCE – The second stage of the “Health Marathon” ended this morning which saw the holding of the conference on “Prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome” at the same time in the conference room of the order of doctors-surgeons and dentists of the province of Lecce: it was a walk through the city streets with stops in the most characteristic points of the historic center, while a small “clinic” in Piazza Mazzini provided free services with free screening for obesity, diabetes and diabetic foot, heart disease, osteoporosis and headaches. Nutritionists and psychologists for eating disorders were also present.

“We are aware that only the team can give a result – said the president of CAM and the Order’s Communication Commission, Luigi Peccarisi – and it is also for this reason that the medical order has called bodies and institutions to network. A year of events to raise awareness among the population on the importance of screening and correct lifestyles because by taking care of our health we will be able to have the correct use of economic resources to ensure that the national health system cannot deviate entirely towards the private sector”.

From the conference came the appeal for greater attention towards obese patients: “We hope, in the future, to be able to have adequate funds for the treatment of obesity” – underlined Stefano Scardia, contact person for the specific Lecce Local Health Authority center located within the hospital dietetic and clinical nutrition unit directed by Piero Caroli -.

“To date – he explained – for a first visit the obese patient pays 27 euros in fees and the drugs, prescribed according to guidelines, are also paid for. We are confident that in the short term we will be able to have the possibility of exemption for patients particularly at cardiovascular risk, reserved for centers and specialist doctors”.

On resources, the general director, Stefano Rossi, reiterated the need to optimize availability by focusing on multidisciplinarity to treat diseases: “We must imagine different communication paths – he clarified – on which we need to reflect. The theme, therefore, is to change our skin”.

The “Health Marathon” will return on November 15, 16 and 17 with the third stage dedicated to the prevention of cervical cancer. On the 15th, the ASL Lecce mobile clinic for vaccination against HPV will be active in Piazza Mazzini, in Lecce. The 16th will be dedicated to a conference, starting at 9am, in the Order’s conference room, on the prevention of cervical cancer to raise awareness among general practitioners. On the 17th in the gynecology departments of the Fazzi hospitals in Lecce and Santa Caterina Novella di Galatina it will be possible to carry out pap tests and vaccinations.
