Hawking’s Comet Warning: 3I/ATLAS & Solar System Risk

The passage of comet 3I/ATLAS through the solar system generated both astonishment and concern in the scientific community. Its strange trajectory and origin outside the boundaries of our cosmic neighborhood revived ancient warnings about how little we know about the universe and the risks of encountering the unknown.

Among these warnings, many remembered the words of the famous British physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking, who for years reflected on the possible dangers of contact with extraterrestrial civilizations. For the scientist, the simple fact of trying to communicate with more advanced beings could have devastating consequences for humanity.

The comet was detected for the first time in July 2025. Since then, it has been the subject of intense studies. Although NASA maintains that there is no risk for the Earth, since its closest point will be about 270 million kilometers, its irregular behavior and the fact that it cannot be observed while it passes behind the Sun unleashed all kinds of hypotheses.

One of the experts who drew the most attention is Harvard theoretical physicist Avi Loeb, who suggests not ruling out that this celestial body is more than a simple comet.

“We worry about existential threats like artificial intelligence or climate change, but we don’t talk about alien technology. We should”declared the researcher, asking the scientific community to take seriously the possibility that 3I/ATLAS is a probe sent by an advanced civilization.

His statements recalled the warnings Hawking made in 2010 during the documentary series Into The Universe with Stephen Hawking.

On that occasion, the astrophysicist stated: “If aliens ever visit us, the result could be similar to when Columbus arrived in America, which did not end well for the Native Americans”.

According to the prominent physicist, a civilization capable of traveling between stars has probably exhausted the resources of its own world and is looking for others to colonize.

This idea is related to the so-called ‘dark forest’ hypothesis, a theory that suggests that intelligent civilizations prefer to remain silent so as not to be detected by more powerful ones. From that perspective, sending signals or information into space would be a dangerous gamble.

For this reason, Hawking opposed projects that include messages, coordinates or videos directed at potential extraterrestrial civilizations.

Meanwhile, both NASA and the European Space Agency maintain a cautious stance. On their official site, they highlighted the scientific relevance of the phenomenon, pointing out that the comet does not represent any threat and that its trajectory offers a unique opportunity to study materials from other star systems.

In addition, they added that “it will reappear on the other side of the Sun in early December 2025, which will allow new observations to be made.”

3I/ATLAS, the interstellar object that baffled the scientific community

Comet 3I/ATLAS baffled the scientific community, mainly because its characteristics and behavior defy what is expected of a natural comet.

The body showed an “antitail”, a jet of gas that pointed towards the Sun, in the opposite direction to what occurs in natural comets. This motion, along with a trajectory “tuned” to the orbital plane of our system, puzzled scientists and suggested non-random behavior.

The analyzes revealed an atypical chemical composition. The comet released a significant amount of pure nickel and compounds that are more common in terrestrial industrial processes than in natural objects.

Given the combination of its anomalous behavior, unique chemical composition, and potential age of billions of years, some scientists have raised the possibility that 3I/ATLAS is a non-natural technological structure.
