HARTFORD — No injuries were reported when a fire in an unattended burn pit spread to a pole barn Friday afternoon on Clover Road near its intersection with Badger Road, according to Hartford Fire & Rescue.
Hartford rescue personnel responded to a report of a barn on fire on Clover Road at 1:24 p.m. The first arriving fire command vehicle found a metal pole barn on fire, and one of two vehicles inside the building was also on fire. Heavy smoke could be seen in the sky from over a mile away.
A 911 caller reported that someone was trying to get into the building to remove equipment.
An occupant reported that no one was inside the building. The incident commander deployed an FST (fire suppression tool) to help knock down the first and slow its growth.
Fire personnel quickly deployed hose lines into the building and to the rear of the building to extinguish the flames.
No fire or EMS personnel were injured during the incident, and the occupant was not injured either.
An investigation found the cause of the fire was related to a burn pit behind the building being unattended. According to the fire department, the occupant had been burning cardboard and other items in the burn pit. After going inside the house, the fire spread to plastic storage bins near the burn pit and then spread to the building as the fire grew in size. This then started one of the vehicles on fire, before a passerby on the road noticed the fire and called 911.
Assistance was provided by the sheriff’s department through dispatch services and deputies.
WE Energies electric and gas assured that there were no power supply concerns.
