The play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will end in Hamburg in summer 2026. A new show is planned for fall, details are still unknown.
The play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” has attracted over 1.5 million visitors at the Theater am Großmarkt in Hamburg since the end of 2021 and will be performed for the last time in the summer of 2026. The production, based on a story by Jack Thorne, Joanne K. Rowling and John Tiffany, features a specially converted stage and impressive effects.
Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, the play’s producers, expressed pride in the Hamburg production, which marks the first non-English language interpretation of the play. “We look forward to seven more great months in this special city,” said the producers. They emphasize the importance of the premiere as a high point in the history of the production.
The play is a success not only in Hamburg, but worldwide: The show is one of the ten highest-grossing productions of all time on Broadway and will celebrate its tenth anniversary on London’s West End in July 2026. The company ATG Entertainment announced that there will be a “new, brilliant show” in Hamburg in autumn 2026. However, those responsible did not yet want to reveal what that would be.
The play, which was originally scheduled to premiere on March 15, 2020, underwent several postponements due to the corona pandemic and finally premiered on December 5, 2021. Originally presented in two parts, the switch to a compact one-part production took place on February 19, 2023. At the end of October there was a significant change in the ensemble: 25 of the 40 actors were recast, including most of the main roles.
