Mohammad Hannoun, the Jordanian architect arrested in Genoa as part of the Domino operation because he was accused of financing Hamas “was very lucid and precise in reconstructing all the steps of the financing and from tomorrow we will begin to study them. He has always operated in a traceable manner and always with registered associations, many of which are also in Israel”. The conversation between Hannoun’s defenders Emanuele Tambuscio and Fabio Sommovigo lasted a couple of hours in the Genoa Marassi prison, where Hannoun has been detained for 48 hours.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 30 December, the day on which the guarantee interrogation will be held, Hannoun “will clarify some passages with the investigating judge through a spontaneous statement but on our advice – the lawyers said – he will not undergo interrogation also because we have not yet received all the documents filed”. Hannoun also spoke with his lawyers about the accusation made against him by the investigators, namely that he was fleeing to Türkiye. “Hannoun constantly goes to Türkiye for charity activities and specified to us that from 7 October 2023 he no longer had the possibility of operating from Italy”. For the lawyers, in view of the Review, an issue to be resolved is the nature and usability of the documents provided by Israel and used by the Genoese prosecutors to say that the associations receiving the funding are in reality in the hands of Hamas. This is material seized or formed “on the battlefield – explain the lawyers – and we do not know with what methods and what procedural or procedural guarantees from which a series of information is obtained which for us are acts of investigation by a foreign police and not by a judicial authority, the nature of which will be the subject of study in the coming weeks”.
Interview in prison in Sollicciano with his defense lawyer, today, also for Rahed al Salahat. “We will answer the questions and I will ask for his release – said the lawyer Samuele Zucchini – Meanwhile today we clarified on various aspects. I found him very calm, he explained that he is responsible in Florence and Tuscany, as an employee of the association, for the collection of funds to be used for the purchase of medicines, food and water and for the support of the sick in Gaza“. With the defender al Salahat he would have admitted that he knew some of the suspects in the investigation, as well as Hannoun by working for the same association. And while Genoa and Florence are awaiting the warrant interrogation in Rome, the headquarters of the charity association for solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Centocelle neighborhood was searched. Just over 100 thousand euros seized. Meanwhile, the network of solidarity around the suspect is beginning to emerge: the Coordination of Jurists and Lawyers for Palestine (Gav) has expressed “dismay at the media hype fueled by some newspapers from the political and cultural right”. The Gav reiterates “the utmost trust in the work of the Italian judiciary and full respect for its constitutional prerogatives. The use of Israeli sources to declare the membership of certain humanitarian organizations in Hamas cannot be considered decisive due to the lack of reliability of these sources, as they come from the State used for the political manipulation of justice as well as being accused of genocide and other serious international crimes”.
The Turin Coordination for Gaza also denounces what it defines as a “repressive attack” by the ProPal movement. Politics is still in turmoil: Silvia Salis, mayor of Genoa, speaks openly about complaints. “I have never gone to the square with other mayors to listen to Hannoun. On September 17th we participated for a few minutes in one of the many Music for Peace initiatives, without any contact with Hannoun, neither then nor on other occasions – she wrote -. I will sue those who spread invented news and I ask the other mayors to follow me”. But, adds Salis, “I will never distance myself from an extraordinary movement of solidarity for the Palestinian population born in Genoa and of which I am profoundly proud”. He also attacks Avs: “We have nothing to apologize for. We will sue anyone who continues to spread lies and approach Hamas” writes Marco Grimaldi. Brothers of Italy doesn’t hear us: “the participation of many mayors and left-wing exponents in those demonstrations of solidarity – says the Florentine senator of FdI Paolo Marcheschi -, which are instead turning out to be real fundraisers not in favor of the children of Gaza but of the murderers who support Hamas, cannot go unnoticed”. Meanwhile, a government briefing on the Hannoun case will be held on Wednesday 14 January at 5.30pm in the Chamber. This was established by the Montecitorio group leaders’ conference.
