Hannah Joyce’s Flexera: Revolutionizing Home Reformer Pilates

When Hannah Joyce discovered reformer Pilates a few years ago, she was instantly hooked. Unlike other forms of exercise she tried, Pilates felt more like a pursuit she truly enjoyed rather than a chore.

The Birth of Flexera

In December 2023, Joyce decided to share her passion for Pilates while also turning it into her full-time profession. Seven months later, she launched Flexera, a portable, at-home version of the reformer Pilates bench.

Why Flexera?

“When I started reformer Pilates, I saw remarkable improvements in both my physical and mental health,” Joyce explains. “I wanted to schedule more sessions, but I was limited by time, studio availability, and distance.”

What Joyce desired was an elegant, affordable, and space-efficient reformer bench for home use. The market was lacking this product, and Joyce seized the opportunity to create it.

Design and Functionality

The Flexera reformer is designed to look like a piece of high-end furniture, thanks to its oak finish and available fabric options of ivory, mocha, or sage. At first glance, it resembles a narrow bed that slides along a carriage, complete with adjustable resistance straps and springs.

Competitive Advantage

“Existing reformers are often large, cumbersome, and expensive, intended primarily for commercial use,” Joyce elaborates. “Flexera offers studio-quality Pilates at a more affordable price point.”

The Flexera unit retails for €2,000, inclusive of delivery and accessories. Assembly is relatively straightforward, and the device folds neatly away when not in use.

Target Audience

Flexera caters to private buyers and fitness studios. Currently, production and assembly take place in China, but Joyce plans to gradually move manufacturing closer to home as sales scale.

Market Reach and Sales

Since launching in July, Joyce has sold over 100 units across Ireland, Britain, the European Union, and the United Arab Emirates. Sales are evenly split between domestic and international customers.

“The reformer bench has existed for years, but Flexera brings a fresh, accessible twist,” Joyce asserts. “It incorporates customer feedback and improves upon traditional models, making it more user-friendly and visually appealing.”

Benefits of Reformer Pilates

Reformer Pilates is renowned for its low-impact nature while delivering a full-body workout. It works all muscle groups, benefiting individuals looking to enhance strength and flexibility, and those undergoing rehabilitation.

In today’s health-conscious world, people often lack the time or resources to visit a gym. Flexera provides a convenient home-based alternative, complemented by an app and online classes to foster a supportive community.

Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles

One of Joyce’s biggest hurdles was finding a suitable manufacturer. Her vision was specific regarding quality and aesthetics, and the search process was both lengthy and meticulous. However, it proved worthwhile, and production has been smooth.

“Placing the initial order felt risky, but investing the time to find the right fit was crucial,” Joyce reflects. “The current supplier does not require large upfront orders, allowing us to scale production as sales increase.”

Previous Ventures

Joyce’s journey to Flexera began with her background in psychology, particularly in learning and development. In 2022, she launched a soft skills learning platform tailored for tech teams.

However, the tech sector faced severe job losses, and companies cut their training budgets, causing the platform to falter.

Future Plans

Joyce is in the process of preparing for a funding round of €750,000, which she intends to use to grow her team. She also plans to introduce rental and flexible payment options for Flexera, catering to customers who prefer subscription-based models over outright purchases.

“There’s already a significant waiting list for rental units, with renters having the option to buy at a reduced rate,” Joyce notes.

A Passionate Vision

For Hannah Joyce, Flexera is more than just a business venture. It’s a reflection of her passion for Pilates and her commitment to making high-quality exercise equipment accessible and affordable for everyone.

“At a time when people are striving to prioritize their health, Flexera offers a practical solution that empowers them to maintain their fitness journey from the comfort of their own homes,” Joyce concludes.
