Adapting a classic to a modern setting carries a dual burden of expectation, both the weight of its legacy and the cynical or sincere injection of relevance. A new film of Hamlet, directed by Aneil Karia with Riz Ahmed starring in the title role, is a suburban London and south Asian reimagining, with a ruthless capitalist property empire as a kingdom. This production is refreshingly unburdened by history, and unshackles itself quickly from the moorings of its origins. In this echoing story, with ever-increasing circles of bereavement and psychosocial distress, the unspoken moments are often more telling than the famous dialogue.
