Hamas Frees Hostages, Ceasefire Tests Amid Clashes in Gaza
KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip — Eight hostages were released by Hamas-led militants in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, marking a significant, albeit chaotic, step in the ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement. This release was part of a larger prisoner exchange aimed at ending one of the most destructive conflicts between the two parties.
Hostage Release and Prisoner Swap
The swaps of hostages for prisoners are a cornerstone of the recent ceasefire agreement, signed to halt the deadliest and most destructive war ever fought between Israel and Hamas. Hamas continues to hold several dozen hostages abducted in their October 7, 2023, attack that sparked the conflict.
Militants first freed three Israelis—after parading them through a rowdy audience in Gaza—and five Thai nationals, who were working on farms in southern Israel when the attack occurred.
Reactions on Both Sides
On the Israeli side, the release of hostages prompted scenes of elation. Crowds gathered outside hospitals where hostages were taken to cheer as ambulances brought them home. In Tel Aviv, the excitement was palpable as families reunited.
