Reading time
April offers a wide range of events in Haltern am See – from socially critical art to family entertainment to theater and literature. If you would like to get an overview, you will find the most important dates throughout the month here.
Cartoon exhibition
Table of Contents
The caricature exhibition “Shining Prospects” opens on April 5th (Easter Sunday) in the parish church of St. Sixtus. Around 40 artists are showing a total of 99 works there that deal with global challenges such as climate change, hunger, human rights and globalization.
The exhibition, organized by the Catholic relief organization Misereor, relies on satirical and pointed representations to make contradictions visible. For example, the cartoons address the discrepancy between the Western lifestyle and its global consequences or how Europe deals with refugees. Consumption and excess are also critically examined. Humor deliberately serves as a means to stimulate thought and initiate social debates.

Circus with dinosaur show
The Circus Fantasia will be performing from April 9th to 12th (Thursday to Sunday) on a meadow on Dorstener Straße, at the corner of Auf der Lings. Several performances are planned over four days: from Thursday to Saturday from 4 p.m., on Sunday from 11 a.m. A special highlight will be a “dinosaur” show. Visitors can also experience reptiles up close. Tickets can be reserved in advance by calling 0171 2891973.
Hamlet reinterpreted
With “Game of Kings,” the youth ensemble “The Muses” will bring their own interpretation of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” to the stage of the Lea Drüppel Theater in April. The premiere and further performances are on April 17th and 24th (each Friday) at 8 p.m. and on April 19th and 26th (each Sunday) at 5 p.m. The production sets new accents, especially with the figure of Horatio, who becomes much more of a focus.
The piece is the result of a collaborative work process between the 16 ensemble members aged 13 to 18, who developed, changed and reassembled scenes. The production is also new territory for the theater in terms of content, as the youth ensemble is daring to create a dark and complex drama for the first time.
Canoe tour on the Lippe
The “Sunny Sunday” canoe tours on the Lippe start the new season on April 19th (Sunday). The city agency is once again organizing the approximately ten kilometer long tour in collaboration with a provider from Dorsten. The route leads through the nature reserve between Datteln-Ahsen and Flaesheim.
The tour starts at 11 a.m. and lasts about four hours. Adults pay 36 euros, children and young people up to 17 years pay 24 euros. The price includes bus transfer, equipment and support. Registrations are possible up to three days before the appointment at the city agency or online at www.pretix.eu/tourismus

Reading with Julia Engelmann
Last but not least, author and poetry slammer Julia Engelmann is coming to Haltern am See on April 28th (Tuesday). From 7.30 p.m. she will read from her debut novel “Heaven Without End” in the city library on Lavesumer Straße. In it she tells the story of 15-year-old Charlie, who misses her father – especially since her mother has a new partner again. At the same time, their friendship is shaken when her best friend kisses the boy Charlie is in love with. Since then, she has felt as if there was a pane of glass between her and the world. Only with the idiosyncratic French fries, whose actual name is Kornelius, does this distance slowly begin to change. Engelmann became known in 2014 with her poetry slam text “One Day, Baby,” which was viewed millions of times on the Internet. The reading is sold out.
