According to Justice officials, strategic investments in traffic management are now yielding tangible results. These investments encompass a multi-faceted approach, incorporating increased route monitoring, the deployment of mobile camera units, and closer collaboration with local police forces. As an example, the number of violations recorded by mobile cameras alone saw a 10% increase between 2023 and 2024, demonstrating the effectiveness of these technological advancements.

Moreover, the elimination of tolerance margins on highways has contributed to the heightened risk of detection. This zero-tolerance approach leaves less room for unintentional speeding and ensures that even minor infractions are more likely to be flagged.

Company Car Accountability: closing the Loopholes

A significant portion of traffic violations, approximately one-third, involve company-owned vehicles. With an estimated 626,000 company cars on Belgian roads, ensuring accountability for these violations has been a persistent challenge. Historically, companies have been hesitant to identify the drivers responsible for traffic offenses, leading to difficulties in enforcing penalties.

However, recent changes in regulations and enforcement practices are beginning to address this issue. While in 2022, companies only identified the responsible driver in 57% of cases, this figure has risen to approximately 75% in both 2023 and 2024. This improvement suggests a growing awareness of the consequences of non-compliance.

Incentives and Penalties: Driving Compliance

The turning point appears to be the revised penalty notification system introduced in the spring of 2023. The updated system clearly warns companies that failure to identify the driver responsible for a traffic violation will result in a substantial amicable settlement of 500 euros. This financial deterrent has proven effective in encouraging companies to comply with the identification requirement.

Along with the penalty for non-compliance, the revised system also offers a more streamlined process for payment. Companies now have the option to pay the initial traffic fine directly, after which the identified driver will receive a separate payment invitation. This separation of obligation simplifies the administrative process and ensures that the appropriate individual is held accountable.
