Exploring Shohei Ohtani’s Hometown: Oshu City, Japan

OSHU CITY, Japan (AP) — Welcome to the heart of rural Japan, a small town called Oshu City, which gained global attention for its famous resident, Shohei Ohtani. This place, famed for its high-quality Maesawa beef and traditional ironware manufacturing, is now on the maps of baseball enthusiasts worldwide because of its most celebrated export, Ohtani.

Known locally as the “countryside” or “inaka,” Oshu City is a quiet, picturesque retreat only 300 miles from bustling Tokyo. Once a seasoned Little Leaguer, Ohtani’s MLB journey took him from Mizusawa Pirates and Hanamaki Higashi High School to the World Series and his current All-Star form with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Hair Salon Shrine to Ohtani

Hironobu Kanno runs the “Seems” salon in Oshu City, which has transformed into a virtual shrine for Shohei Ohtani. With 300 artifacts hung outside, the salon is a museum showcasing autographed memorabilia, jerseys, caps, and even a replica replica of the pitcher’s throwing hand.

Kanno, a self-proclaimed private fan club representative, began collecting Ohtani’s memorabilia when the player became a professional in 2013. Since then, the collection has grown into a pride symbol for the fans who travel to Oshu on pilgrimages.

“Customers and visitors enjoy seeing the collection and feel closer to Ohtani,” said Kanno. “I’d like to see it in a real museum someday.”

A Town United by Ohtani’s Star Power

In Oshu City, Ohtani’s influence extends far beyond the hair salon, marked prominently at the city hall. The municipal government has set up a corner dedicated to Ohtani photos, newspaper clippings, and pennants.

One standout exhibit is a golden replica of Ohtani’s right hand, complete with a video showing how it was made. Visitors pour in from around Japan and beyond, eager to grasp a piece of the legend.

Residents like Chiaki, who traveled from Osaka to witness the exhibit, share the incredible energy Ohtani brings. Keigo Kishino, her husband, described Ohtani’s impact saying, “He is a constant source of inspiration.”

Oshu City: Hub of National Pride and Baseball Love

Oshu is famously proud of Ohtani, perhaps more than any other MLB player from Japan. While pitchers like Yusei Kikuchi and phenom Rintaro Sasaki hail from nearby communities, no one generates the buzz Ohtani does.

Demonstrations of his influence range from the city aiding rice paddy paintings to draw attention to the player – symbolizing Ohtani’s transcendence of Japanese baseball stereotypes. For Oshu Mayor Jun Kuranari, it’s evident that Ohtani is an inspiration to locals and a proof of Japan’s incredible talent pool.
