These products contain substances that affect kidney health if used in excessive amounts or for prolonged periods. One of the most worrying is paraphenylenediamine (PPD) and aminophenolsaccording to the Bright Kidney Center.
“When these chemicals come into contact with the skin, they can be absorbed into the bloodstream and eventually reach the kidneys. Once in the kidneys, they can cause damage to cells and tissues, causing kidney dysfunction. This can manifest with symptoms such as decreased urine production, swelling in the legs or ankles, fatigue, and difficulty breathing”, explains the specialized center.

Additionally, some people may develop an allergic reaction to these chemicals, as they can cause allergic interstitial nephritis, an inflammation of kidney tissue that can affect its function.
Numerous investigations have been carried out to understand the damage that these products can cause, and the results are worrying, since the average frequency of use of hair dyes in India is between two and three times a yearaccording to a study published in ‘The International Journal of Trichology’.
According to researchers, the skin on the scalp is thicker than that on the rest of the body, but it also has more blood vessels, which makes the use of hair dyes with PPD more risky.

For those who are lovers of these chemical products, experts recommend the use of those that are 100 percent natural and of plant origin, such as henna and indigo, since these coat the hair strands instead of penetrating the scalp.
Additionally, it is important that you always check the ingredients of the dye container and verify that they are free of ammonia and PPD.
