Viruses evolve? A person in the United States died of the “H5N5” avian influenza infection, becoming the “first in the world”

Real-time Center/Reported by Xu Ziwei

Health officials in Washington State in the United States confirmed yesterday (21st) that an elderly man in the state died from being infected with the rare H5N5 avian influenza strain. It is understood that this is the first human death from this type of virus in the world.

Foreign media outlets “Associated Press” and “Daily Mail” reported today that according to a statement issued by the Washington State Department of Health, the patient lived in Grays Harbor County and had multiple chronic diseases. The poultry raised in his backyard had been exposed to wild birds. The route of infection is unclear, but officials speculate that it may be related to contact with wild or home-raised poultry.

It is understood that the patient was admitted to the hospital for treatment early this month due to symptoms such as high fever, unconsciousness and difficulty breathing. He was first treated at a local medical institution and then transferred to a hospital in King County, Seattle. Laboratory results confirmed that he was infected with the H5N5 virus. However, the official did not disclose the patient’s gender, age, name and other personal information.

In response to the world’s first human death from avian influenza, the state’s health official Xu Ji said that “the risk to the public is still low” and “no other relevant personnel have been found to have tested positive for avian influenza.” The U.S. Department of Health said it would continue to monitor people who had been in close contact with the man, but “there is currently no evidence that this virus can be transmitted from person to person.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a statement on the infection case earlier this month, also emphasizing that there is no information to show that “the public health risk is increased as a result of the case.” H5N5 is not considered to pose a greater threat to humans than the H5N1 virus. Since last year, there have been at least 70 reported cases of human infection with H5N1 in the United States. Most of them occurred in dairy farmers and poultry farm workers, and most of the symptoms were mild.
