Avian flu is a highly contagious viral disease, often fatal for many species of birds and poultry. Since 2022, a serious avian flu epidemic, the largest ever recorded, has raged on several continents. However, it is the highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype, which mainly affects birds. At high doses, this subtype is in principle also transmissible to humans.
