Gun Sale Shooting: Teens Injured, Charges Filed

(LPL) – An attempted sale of a firearm ended in a shooting in Covington, leaving three teenagers injured and eight people, including minors and adults, facing criminal charges.

According to the Covington Police Department, the incident occurred on Saturday, December 13 before 4:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Wooten Street, in the North Subs neighborhood. The transaction, in which several teenagers participated, led to an argument that quickly escalated to an exchange of gunfire between people who were inside a vehicle and others who were outside of it.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division went to the scene to begin the investigation. As a result of the shooting, three teenagers were injured. One of them, a minor, was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, while the other two received medical attention at Baptist Memorial Hospital–Tipton. Authorities confirmed that the injuries are not life-threatening.

Following the investigation, five minors and three adults were charged. Charges filed against the teens include aggravated assault, vandalism, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence, depending on the case. A 17-year-old faces additional charges of facilitating an aggravated assault.

Among the adults charged is Markevious Nelson, 23, who faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Also charged were Tammy Poole, 58, and Vanquita Taylor, 35, both with violating juvenile court orders.

Police Chief Donna Turner said the case reflects the seriousness of the problem of minors’ access to firearms. He indicated that authorities will continue to work with Tipton County youth services officers and that parents or guardians who do not adequately supervise their children will be held accountable.

Police Chief Donna Turner said the case highlights the dangers of juveniles having access to firearms and noted that the situation could have been fatal. She added that police will continue working closely with Tipton County youth services and will hold parents accountable when they fail to properly supervise their children.
