Google Maps Adopts New Name for Gulf of Mexico

Less than a month following President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, the updated name has now surfaced on Google Maps for users in the United States.

The Controversial Executive Order

President Trump signed Executive Order 14172 on February 20, 2025, on Inauguration Day, mandating the name change of the body of water between the United States and Mexico.

In a subsequent proclamation recognizing February 9 as “Gulf of America Day,” Trump wrote, “I took this action in part because, as stated in that Order, ‘[t]he area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.”

Google Maps Adjusts to Government Changes

A week after the order was issued, Google confirmed through a post on X that the company adheres to a long-standing policy of incorporating name changes reflected in official government sources.

“People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Gulf of America,’ and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico,'” Google stated in a Monday press release. “Everyone else will see both names.”

Other Implications of the Name Change

The executive order was expansive in scope, also requiring the renaming of the tallest mountain in North America from Denali to Mount McKinley. However, as of 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning, this particular name change had not been updated on Google Maps.

Google had issued a statement in January indicating that they would update the name of Mount McKinley, signaling their intention to comply with the order.

FAA’s Response

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is in the process of updating its data and charts to reflect the name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as well as from Denali to Mount McKinley, according to a memo released on Monday.

Public Reaction and Debate

This executive order has sparked debate over national pride, historical accuracy, and the potential impact on international relations. Critics argue that the name Gulf of Mexico recognizes the contributions of multiple cultures, particularly those indigenous to the region and the Spanish influence.

Supporters of the name change see it as a reaffirmation of America’s identity and sovereignty.

The Future of Geographical Naming

The renaming of geographical features is rarely a straightforward process. Disagreements over territorial integrity, cultural sensitivity, and sovereignty often lead to prolonged discussions and potential opposition.

This decision by Google to update its maps reflects the significant impact of governmental actions on technology companies and the integration of such changes into widely used platforms.

Conclusion

The decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America has sparked a fascinating debate about national identity and history. As technological platforms like Google Maps update their data to reflect this executive order, it underscores the complex interplay between governance and technology.
