Greenland Sale: Trump & Denmark Dispute – Unfair Deal?

by Archynetys World Desk

In an interview on the Fox News program Hannity, Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff and chief strategist in the White House, refers to it as a “bad deal” that the US will in practice bear a large part of the bill for the defense of Greenland, while the territory “100 percent” belongs to Denmark.

– They cannot defend Greenland

Miller uses harsh words about Denmark’s capacity:

– Denmark is a tiny country with a tiny economy and a tiny military. They cannot defend Greenland. They cannot control Greenland’s territory, he says.

He further claims that for “500 years” there has been a legal understanding that links territorial control to the ability to manage and secure the area:

– To control a territory you need to be able to defend a territory, improve a territory, inhabit a territory. Denmark has failed every single one of these tests, claims Miller.

I think the US gets the bill

Miller highlights the size of Greenland to emphasize his point:

– Greenland is 25 percent larger than Alaska. Greenland is the size of a quarter of the continental United States, he says.

He continues:

– So Denmark wants us to spend hundreds of billions of dollars defending a territory for them… 100 percent at the expense of the United States, but it belongs 100 percent to Denmark, says Miller.

He calls it “a bad deal” and “an unfair deal,” adding:

– Most importantly: It is unfair to the American taxpayer, who has supported all of Europe’s defense for generations.

Denmark announced in October that they will invest 27 billion Danish kroner in equipping the defense of Greenland. The amount corresponds to over NOK 42.4 billion.

This week, European countries have sent a small number of military personnel to Greenland at the same time as a planned military exercise led by Denmark is being prepared.

Have also talked about the “right” to Greenland

Miller has been vocal in several interviews about Greenland recently. In a CNN interview earlier in January, Miller was repeatedly asked by CNN reporter Jake Tapper if he would rule out the use of military force against Greenland.

Miller responded by questioning the premise and advocated that the central question is “by what right does Denmark control Greenland”.

– What do you mean by military power? Greenland has a population of 30,000 people, Jake. The real question is by what right does Denmark control Greenland? Miller replied.

Greenland is a self-governing area of the Kingdom of Denmark and incidentally has around 57,000 inhabitants and not 30,000 as Miller claimed.

Towards the end of the interview, Miller said that there is no need to talk about a military operation, adding that “no one is going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland”.

The interview came after Miller’s wife, Katie Miller, posted a photo of Greenland wrapped in the American flag on X, with the caption “SOON”.

“Trump’s brain”

Miller is considered one of Trump’s most influential people, and for many years has been a key architect behind tough immigration policies. Now he is back in the White House as deputy chief of staff for policy, a role that gives him great influence in the administration.

In previous profiles, Miller has been referred to as one of the few who has retained Trump’s trust throughout his career, and he himself has rejected accusations of racism and white nationalism, among other things.
