An agreement to explore cooperation in the development of sustainable aviation fuels in Africa has been signed by the African Development Bank (AFDB) and JGC Corporation, a major Japanese engineering company.

The term “sustainable aviation fuel” refers to any fuel produced from renewable sources, such as vegetable oils, waste and even captured carbon, and designed to reduce the environmental impact of air travel.

The Letter of Intent establishes a framework for cooperation between the two institutions to jointly promote development, share information and knowledge and explore co-financing opportunities for sustainable aviation fuels and other environmentally sustainable aviation solutions in Africa.

The production and adoption of sustainable fuels in Africa are part of the banking group’s strategy for sustainable transport, mobility and energy transition. Cooperation with JGC will include conducting feasibility and demand studies for the production and adoption of Japanese technologies in Africa in this area.

JGC Corporation will conduct studies on the demand for sustainable fuels in African markets, conduct technical feasibility assessments, evaluate implementation opportunities suited to local resources and infrastructure, and leverage and facilitate the adoption of Japanese technologies in Africa in this regard.
