A New Era for Graz Public Transportation
Graz is poised to revolutionize its public transportation system with the introduction of 55 state-of-the-art “Flexity” trams by mid-2030. This ambitious project aims to replace the aging fleet, some models dating back to the 1970s, with modern, safer, adn more passenger-friendly vehicles. The initial order includes 15 trams, with options to expand, signaling a notable investment in the city’s future.
Enhanced Safety and Design Innovations
The new “Flexity” trams represent a significant leap forward in safety and design.Building upon the proven “Flexity” platform used in Vienna and other cities, these trams incorporate several key improvements:
- Obstacle Detection Assistance System (ODAS): Equipped with automatic emergency braking, ODAS is designed to prevent accidents, addressing recent safety concerns in Graz.
- LED Signal Strips: Integrated into the doors, these strips visually indicate when doors are locked, enhancing passenger safety during departures.
- Ergonomic Interior: Featuring stainless steel fixtures and high-quality leather seating, the interior is designed for durability and passenger comfort. Leather seats are also expected to be more resistant to vandalism.
- Improved Driver Visibility: While adhering to stricter safety standards, the design subtly adjusts the driver’s viewing window to maintain a sleek appearance without compromising safety.

Increased Capacity and Modern Amenities
The “Flexity” trams are designed to accommodate up to 200 passengers, a significant increase compared to the current trams in Graz, which hold a maximum of 145 people. This enhanced capacity will help alleviate overcrowding during peak hours. Furthermore, each tram will feature six inductive cell phone charging stations, catering to the needs of modern commuters.
Vice Mayor Schwentner emphasized the importance of accessibility, stating,
I think it’s great that they are so well equipped, highlighting the low-entry height of less than eleven centimeters, ensuring near-total accessibility for all passengers.Vice Mayor Judith Schwentner (Greens)
Phased Implementation and Fleet Modernization
The introduction of the “Flexity” trams will be a phased process. Holding Graz aims to retire the older “500”, “600”, and “City Runner” models, streamlining the fleet to consist primarily of “Flexity” and “VarioBahn” trams. According to Holding board member Mark Perz, this modernization is essential for improving safety and reducing maintenance costs.
The goal is to be on the road with two diffrent types, the Flexity and the VarioBahn in the future, said holding board member Mark Perz, underscoring the strategic vision for a streamlined and efficient tram network.Mark Perz,Holding Board Member
While acknowledging the nostalgic appeal of the older trams,Perz stressed the urgent need for modernization, particularly concerning safety. The cost of approximately €3.5 million per new tram is considered a worthwhile investment in the city’s public transportation infrastructure.
Anticipated Launch and Future Expansion
The first “Flexity” trams are expected to debut in early 2026, pending company approval processes. The contract between Holding Graz and Alstom, signed two years prior, includes provisions for maintenance and the potential to increase the order to a total of 55 trams by the end of 2027.
Alstom, a global leader in lasting mobility solutions, is committed to designing the future of rail transport.with a thorough portfolio of products and services,Alstom is a key partner in Graz’s ambitious modernization project.
