The doors of Downton Abbey may have closed after 15 years, but the legacy continues.
The British TV phenomenon-turned-cozy film trilogy wrapped up with one last movie, “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” which concludes the sprawling saga of the Crawley family, chronicled over six seasons of the ITV and PBS series “Downton Abbey.”
Created by Julian Fellowes (HBO’s “The Gilded Age”) the show was an immediate sensation when it arrived stateside in early 2011, earning 15 Emmy awards and 69 nominations, as well as three Screen Actors Guild trophies for best ensemble, led by the late Maggie Smith as the formidable Dowager Countess Violet Crawley.
The new film finds Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) struggle with the ripple effects of divorce in 1930s high society as “the family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace,” according to the film’s synopsis.
“The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepares for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future,” it added.
Fellowes, in the film’s production notes, said with the third film he wanted to “make a point” that Violet’s death “may be the end of a family member, but it wasn’t the end of the family.” He also wanted to show that “families like the Crawleys who survived into the modern world, had to redefine themselves, get used to the new way of things and see if they could live with it.”
“Some rather spectacularly could not, but I would like to feel that the Crawleys are one of the surviving families who have come to terms with the modern world,” the creator added.
