LONDON – As many as 15,000 Ukrainian refugees are seeking homelessness support after their relationships with British sponsors broke down or ended.
The report was published by the British government on Friday (23/2/2024). As of January, around 141,000 Ukrainians had come to the UK under the ‘Homes for Ukrainians’ scheme, which pays UK homeowners £350 (USD444) per month to host Ukrainian citizens or families on six-month contracts.
However, by the end of last August, 4,890 Ukrainian ‘households’ (one parent and at least one child) housed in the scheme had become homeless or nearly homeless, according to the UK’s Public Accounts Committee.
With an additional 3,000 single Ukrainians seeking homelessness help from the council at the end of January, as many as 15,000 people have been forced to live without accommodation over the past two years.
As many as 200,000 Ukrainians have sought asylum in the UK since February 2022, and around 400 people continue to arrive every week, according to the report.
The report blamed the problems on relations between Ukraine and their British hosts being “damaged,” and because the hosts refused to extend their initial six-month contract.
