Aggressive HIV Case Finding adn Treatment Drive Success in Gorontalo
In a significant stride towards combating HIV transmission, the Gorontalo Provincial Health Office (Dinkes) has intensified its HIV case discovery program. This initiative aims to provide timely treatment and ultimately break the chain of transmission within the community. The head of the Health Service, Anang S. Otoluwa, emphasized the critical role of early detection and appropriate treatment in not only extending the lifespan of people living with HIV (Odhiv) but also in preventing further spread of the virus.
Gorontalo Province has emerged as a frontrunner in HIV treatment, achieving a remarkable 99% viral load suppression
rate in 2024. This accomplishment surpasses the national target of 95% set by the Ministry of Health, positioning gorontalo as the only region in Indonesia to attain this level of success. Anang S. Otoluwa proudly acknowledged this achievement, highlighting the challenges involved in initiating and maintaining effective treatment and therapy for HIV/AIDS patients.
The first indicator is treatment for sufferers, the second is the success of the treatment measured by the dupressive viral load. Now we have succeeded in the only green color in Indonesia. But this is really a challenge for us to maintain going forward.
Anang S. Otoluwa, Head of the Health Service
Viral load suppression is a crucial indicator of accomplished HIV treatment. It signifies that the amount of virus in a patient’s body has been reduced to an extremely low level, significantly decreasing the risk of transmission and improving the patient’s overall quality of life. According to recent studies, individuals with sustained viral suppression have virtually no risk of transmitting HIV to their sexual partners, a concept known as Undetectable = Untransmittable
(U=U).
Challenges and Future Directions
While celebrating this achievement,Anang S. Otoluwa stressed the importance of maintaining consistency and continuous enhancement in both identifying new cases and ensuring treatment success. he urged program managers to remain dedicated, acknowledging the frequently enough-unseen hard work that contributes to these positive outcomes.
Rising HIV/AIDS cases in Gorontalo: A Call for Continued Vigilance
Despite the success in viral suppression, data from the gorontalo Provincial Health Office reveals a concerning trend: a significant increase in cumulative HIV/AIDS cases over the past five years. In 2024 alone, there were 242 new cases reported, comprising 194 HIV cases and 48 AIDS cases. The total number of HIV/AIDS cases in Gorontalo from 2001 to December 2024 has reached 1,257. This increase underscores the need for continued and intensified efforts in prevention, testing, and treatment.
This data aligns with global trends. According to UNAIDS, while significant progress has been made in reducing new HIV infections globally, certain regions are experiencing a resurgence, highlighting the need for tailored and intensified prevention strategies.
Recognizing Excellence in HIV/AIDS Program Implementation
In recognition of outstanding contributions to the fight against HIV/AIDS, the Gorontalo Provincial health office presented awards to several key implementers:
- Gorontalo City: Best HIV/AIDS and PIMS program implementer in 2024.
- Limboto Puskesmas: best HIV test and treatment program implementation service in 2024.
- North City Puskesmas: Best HIV Viral Load Program implementing service in 2024.
Conclusion: A Model for Indonesia
Gorontalo’s success in achieving high rates of viral load suppression serves as a model for other regions in Indonesia and beyond. By prioritizing early case detection, providing effective treatment, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, Gorontalo is making significant strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Though, the rising number of new cases highlights the ongoing need for comprehensive prevention strategies and sustained commitment to combating this public health challenge.
