Google’s latest Pixel 9 series has been equipped with advanced features designed to enhance user safety. One standout feature is Satellite SOS, a lifeline that enables users to communicate with emergency services even when cellular data or Wi-Fi connectivity is unavailable. Whether you’re stranded in the wilderness or facing extreme weather conditions, Satellite SOS ensures you can call for help at any time.
How Does Satellite SOS Work?
There’s a Team and Clever Tech Behind It
Satellite SOS leverages Garmin Response, a global emergency response service. When activated, users are connected to dedicated coordinators available 24/7 who can relay your distress signals to the appropriate authorities, including coast guards, search and rescue teams, and law enforcement. They can also inform your emergency contacts of your situation.
This cutting-edge feature is made possible by the Exynos 5400 modem in the Google Tensor G4 chipset and Skylo’s satellite network. The combination provides reliable communication in remote or disaster-stricken areas where traditional networks might fail.
How to Use Satellite SOS?
Try Out a Demo and Learn How to Use It
To get acquainted with Satellite SOS, users can access a demo through the Settings app. Navigate to “Safety & Emergency,” select “Satellite SOS,” and hit “Try Demo.” This hands-on experience helps build confidence and familiarity with the feature.
In case of a real emergency, simply dial 911. If the cellular network isn’t available, you will be prompted to switch to Satellite SOS. Choose the type of emergency you’re facing from a list that includes illnesses, vehicle troubles, and other scenarios. Follow on-screen instructions to move your phone for the best satellite connection.
Once connected, your message is sent to the emergency response team, and you can communicate with them via the Google Messages app to provide updates on your situation.
To exit Satellite SOS, tap End in the upper-left corner.
Who Can Use Satellite SOS?
It’s Not Available to Everyone, Everywhere
Currently, Satellite SOS is only available in the United States, with the exclusion of Hawaii and Alaska. Expansion to other regions is planned, offering further protection to a global audience in the near future. Additionally, the feature is exclusive to the Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold models.
Satellite SOS is free to use at the moment, though this might change in the future.
