Google Maps Offline: Download & Navigate Without Data

Google Maps is one of the most used apps for navigation and local search, but sometimes lack of mobile coverage or the need to reduce data consumption (especially abroad) forces offline use. Fortunately, this function has been available on a stable basis since November 2015 and has constantly enjoyed updates over time that have made the experience totally in line with the needs of motorists and marginally for other categories of users.

Google Maps offline: how it works and why use it

The offline Google Maps service was developed to allow you to download any portion of the map of interest onto your smartphone or other device, perhaps before embarking on a trip. The usual scenario is to hypothetically use a wi-fi connection and then proceed with the subsequent consultation without a data connection, using only the device’s GPS for free.

Once the portion of the map has been downloaded, the saved area allows you to view the location, look for known addresses and follow driving directionsbut without real-time traffic, additional searches or updates outside the specific area. In practice, the app turns into a sort of local navigator: the location dot continues to move and the routes already calculated are followed, but it is not possible to change the itinerary or add new stops without reconnecting to the internet or the mobile network.

Google Maps offline is undoubtedly useful for those traveling by car, camper or motorbikeas well as for tourists and commuters who want to reduce mobile data consumption or avoid mobile roaming.
