Google has announced the addition of four new features to its European Maps request, all designed to promote more sustainable transportation options and discourage driving.

The first of these updates involves expanding Alternative transport recommendations based on AI to a wider range of cities, including Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Warsaw. This function aims to show users when walking or using public transport is a comparable alternative to driving, thereby motivating them to consider options other than their cars.

Enhanced Cycling Information

This summer, Cyclists will receive better details on routes in 17 new european cities, including Hamburg, Madrid, Barcelona, milan, Rome, Zurich, Budapest, Vienna, and Brussels. While it remains unclear if Prague will be included, Google is expanding its cycling route map to cover a total of 125 kilometers. The app will also continue to display warnings regarding dense traffic and steep slopes.

Eco-Kind Driving Options

For situations where driving is necessary, Google Maps offers worldwide mapping of Routes with low fuel consumption.According to Google’s estimates, this feature alone prevented the emission of 2.7 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2024. This is equivalent to removing over 630,000 cars from the roads for an entire year.

Low Emission Zone Alerts

The latest updates focus on Low emissions areas and restricted traffic zones. In the coming months, Google Maps alerts will be expanded to cover more than 1,000 areas of this type throughout Europe, including Italy, Sweden, and Austria.This enhancement will allow drivers to determine whether their vehicle is permitted to enter a specific area and, if necessary, find an alternative route.

As March, iPhone users in the EU have had the option to set Google Maps as their default navigation application rather of Apple Maps.These new features are expected to be beneficial for manny travelers in Europe.
