Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Android users who are still comfortable using Google Assistant can breathe a little easier. Google announced it was postponing plans to replace its old digital assistant with its newest artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Gemini.
Reporting from Engadget, Sunday (21/12/2025), initially, Google targeted to remove Google Assistant from most Android phones by the end of 2025 and replace it completely with Gemini.
However, the tech giant has now revised its schedule as it will take longer to perfect the AI assistant to a new standard.
Google stated that this schedule adjustment was made to ensure the user experience is not disrupted. The company wants to ensure a smooth transition (seamless) for its millions of users.
With this decision, the update process to turn Google Assistant into Gemini on Android devices will continue until 2026.
Google also promised to share more details in the “coming months,” indicating that this transition period may take longer than early 2026.
Gradual Integration in the Google Ecosystem
Signs of Google Assistant’s “retirement” have actually been visible since Google launched Gemini and started embedding old Google Assistant capabilities into it, such as controlling smart home devices connected to cellphones.
In fact, at the launch of the Pixel 9 series in 2024, Google made Gemini the default assistant replacing Google Assistant.
In the future, Google plans to improve its entire product ecosystem, including tablets, cars, and devices connected to cellphones such as headphone and smartwatches with chatbot powered by this AI.
While this transition is certain to happen, not all Android devices will get the Gemini update. Google sets the minimum specifications so that a device can run this AI assistant smoothly, namely using a minimum operating system of Android 10, and having a minimum RAM capacity of 2 GB.
