Goiás Cattle: Anger & Behavioral Changes Reported

by Archynetys Health Desk

The Goiana Agency of Agricultural Defense (Agrodefesa) intensified the actions of capture and control of hematophagous bats in Carmo do Rio Verde, Goiás, after confirmation of cases of herbivores’ rabies in four local rural properties.

According to Agrodefesa, the cases were notified by the producers themselves, who sought agrodefues after observing neurological symptoms in animals. Veterinary doctors collected animal samples and sent for analysis at the Agrodefesa Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (Labvet), which confirmed the cases of anger.

Following the confirmation of the exams, teams from the Rio das Almas regional unit immediately initiated control actions, which include vaccination, sanitary education activities and supervision to identify possible new cases.

“Given a positive case, the action needs to be immediate to contain the spread of the disease and protect both livestock and public health.” Says Agrodefesa President José Ricardo Caixeta Ramos.

Currently, five teams are in the region, within 12 kilometers from the outbreaks, performing epidemiological surveillance and guiding producers about herd vaccination. One team is mobilized to identify possible hematophagous bat shelters and implement population control measures.

Notification of rabies cases

Anger is a serious disease of high lethality. Preventive immunization is an investment that protects not only animals, but also human health, as the disease can be transmitted to people.

The agency stresses that the notification does not generate a fine or penalty. Suspected cases should be informed in the E-Sisbravet systemdirectly at the agency’s local operational unit or by calling 0800 646 1122.
