In a thrilling sprint finish, Matilde Vitillo, representing the Continental team, secured first place in the debut of the Tour of the Apennines Women held in genoa. Vitillo’s powerful performance capped off a successful race.
The 24-year-old italian cyclist,a member of the national track team,boasts an remarkable background as a former junior European champion in both the points race and team pursuit,in addition to holding a junior team pursuit world title.
Vitillo was part of a breakaway group of three riders, including Irene Cagnazzo and Gaia Segato (BePink-Imatra-bongioanni). The breakaway established a lead of 1:10 with only 20km remaining to the finish in Genoa, successfully holding off the pursuing peloton.
Vitillo launched her sprint early in the uphill finish in central Genoa, ultimately winning by a significant margin.
Irene Cagnazzo finished second, followed by Gaia Segato in third.The two BePink-Imatra-Bongioanni riders were unable to surpass Vitillo’s speed in the final stretch.
