Germany’s annual Future Day, encompassing both Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day, recently provided students nationwide with a unique opportunity to explore career paths beyond customary gender roles.In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the state parliament in Düsseldorf became a hub of inspiration, fueled by collaborative initiatives from educational institutions, scientific organizations, and businesses. this year’s event placed a significant emphasis on encouraging young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, collectively known as MINT in German.

Minister Brandes Engages with Future Female Innovators

A central highlight of the day was a meeting between NRW Minister of science Ina Brandes and two exceptional students from the Girls’ Academy Oberhausen, Olivia and fotini Eleni. This personal exchange allowed the students to share their passion for MINT subjects and discuss the critical role of targeted support programs in fostering female participation in technical and scientific professions.

Many my age are undecided in choosing a career. The future day offers the opportunity to recognize interests and shows that girls can also be triumphant in male -dominated professions.

The Girls’ Academy oberhausen is a year-long program designed to introduce girls to the diverse and exciting world of MINT careers. By connecting students with industry partners,the academy provides hands-on experience in school laboratories,company visits,and personalized support for internships and job applications. Participants also benefit from regular networking opportunities,mentorship from role models,and the chance to mentor future generations of aspiring female scientists and engineers.

Another captivating element of Future Day was the “Coding4U – problem solving and modeling” project, featuring the Medion learning robot. This initiative, a collaboration between Medion, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the EU, offers young people valuable insights into cutting-edge technological fields. At the ZDI center booth, the robot named Karl drew considerable attention. Minister Brandes herself engaged in programming the robot, demonstrating the engaging and motivating potential of such hands-on experiences.
