A freight train derailed during a maneuvering operation in Singen,in the Constance district,on Tuesday afternoon,causing notable disruptions to regional rail traffic. The incident damaged an overhead power line, exacerbating the delays.
















Hundreds of passengers were left stranded on tuesday evening, awaiting connections via regional trains or replacement bus services. Disruptions continued into Wednesday morning, and a rail spokeswoman stated that the resumption of normal train operations remained uncertain. The exact number of affected travelers and commuters is currently unknown.

Electricity Shut Off in Singen Station Area

The derailment, which occurred around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, resulted in a power mast being knocked over, leading to a complete power shutdown at the train station. Authorities confirmed that the train was not carrying any hazardous materials. The rail network between Radolfzell on Lake Constance and Engen, as well as the route between Singen and the Swiss town of Thayngen, near schaffhausen, have been impacted.

“Nobody really knew,” said the travelers.

According to railway information, the regional express line connecting Constance and Karlsruhe has been entirely suspended.IC trains operating between Stuttgart and zurich, along with those running between Radolfzell and Konstanz, are now only running between Stuttgart and Tuttlingen. The duration of the disruption remains undetermined.

Emergency Bus Services Activated

Deutsche Bahn has suggested choice travel arrangements:

  • Passengers can utilize regional train services between Tuttlingen and Engen.
  • A replacement bus service is operating between Engen and Singen (Hohentwiel).
  • For those traveling between Singen (Hohentwiel) and switzerland, the SBB (Swiss Federal Railway) is providing a bus service between Singen (Hohentwiel) and Thayngen, where passengers can connect with SBB trains and S-bahns.
  • Travelers heading between Stuttgart and Switzerland are advised to use connections via Karlsruhe and Freiburg (breisgau).

Stranded Travelers Report Lack of Information

One traveler, en route from Ravensburg to Basel, reported a lack of on-site information after being stranded in Singen on Tuesday evening. According to the traveler, the last replacement bus from Singen to Schaffhausen (Switzerland) departed shortly after midnight, with no further replacement services until early Wednesday morning. Passengers were expected to arrange their onward travel from Schaffhausen to Basel independently.

The traveler noted that information regarding replacement transport was scarce, with no official announcements or train staff available to inform stranded passengers about alternative options. “Nobody knew,” the traveler stated.
