Achievement and social commitment – Germany scholarships awarded
They are not only characterized by very good performance, but are also committed to society: 126 Germany scholarships are awarded to students at the University of Bremen. It includes financial support and a varied accompanying program.
“The Germany scholarships were awarded at our university for the first time in the winter semester of 2011/2012 – at that time from 34 sponsors to a total of 76 students. This promising start continued. Since the beginning, a total of almost 1,800 scholarships have been awarded to talented and committed students – 15 years, 1,800 opportunities. We can proudly summarize today: The Germany scholarship is truly a success story!”, emphasized Professor Maren Petersen, Vice President for Teaching and Studies, at the award ceremony. Together with Christina Vocke, Head of Department 6 – Student Affairs, she handed over the certificates to the students.
Funding from the federal government and civil society
As part of the Deutschlandstipendium, the federal government, companies, associations, foundations and private individuals currently support over 33,000 high-performing students nationwide. In this way, civil society takes responsibility for talented young people. Those supported receive 300 euros per month for a year. The federal government pays one half, the other half comes from private sponsors. Sponsors can sponsor one or more scholarships over a period of at least one year. The contribution of 1,800 euros per scholarship is tax deductible.
The selection criteria for funding include not only school or university performance, but also social or community commitment. The scholarships are awarded by a scholarship council made up of students and teachers at the university. The scholarship also includes non-material support. For example, it includes workshops for orientation on life and career issues. Offers from the sponsors provide insights into working environments and valuable networks.
Erdem Galipoğlu explained what the funding actually means for the students. He was part of the first funding cohort at the University of Bremen in 2011/12 and is now a professor of business administration, in particular business informatics and digital transformation, at the University of Bremen. “The Deutschlandstipendium not only rewards outstanding achievements, but also takes into account voluntary commitment and the different realities of life of the students. Many are the first in their families to study, others have to overcome language or structural hurdles. Through the Deutschlandstipendium they not only receive financial support, but also appreciation and encouragement,” he said.
Why former professor Eva Rieger supports the Deutschlandstipendium
A total of 64 companies, private individuals, associations and foundations sponsored the scholarships, including eight new sponsors. Professor Eva Rieger is one of them. Why does she support the Deutschlandstipendium? “I was a professor of musicology at the University of Bremen from 1990 to 2000 and was able to organize seminars on female composers there, among other things. The students participated well, it was fun. The atmosphere in Bremen was relaxed and I liked it. When I inherited some money, I was happy – I would now like to share part of it with the university and let it benefit students through the Germany Scholarship,” she says.
